Bolt has tightened its dominance in Nairobi’s growing electric mobility market after electric motorbikes crossed 40 percent of its active boda fleet, giving the ride-hailing platform the largest EV footprint in Kenya’s transport sector.
“Kenya is at the forefront of clean mobility in Africa, and today’s announcement marks a pivotal step in scaling practical, affordable and sustainable transport solutions,”said its Senior General Manager, East Africa Dimmy Kanyankole.
“By reaching 30% electric bike penetration and onboarding 1,500 M-KOPA-supported riders, we are demonstrating that sustainability and improved rider livelihoods can go hand in hand.”
Bolt says the uptake of e-bikes aligns with national efforts to rein in transport-related emissions, now among the fastest-growing contributors to urban air pollution.

“Our partnership with Bolt is proving that when financing barriers are removed, riders are eager to adopt cleaner and cheaper electric alternatives. Reaching 1,500 riders is just the beginning, we are committed to scaling this impact even further,”said Nena Sanderson, Chief Product Officer and Managing Director, M-KOPA Mobility,
The company says the shift marks one of the fastest fleet-level transitions in the region, driven largely by the economics of electric bikes, which offer riders major savings as fuel prices and maintenance costs remain high.
More than 1,700 riders have now joined Bolt’s electric programme through M-KOPA’s financing model, enabling the company to hit its 2025 electrification target ahead of schedule.
Bolt data shows riders completed 4.8 million electric trips over the past year, highlighting rising customer demand for cleaner and cheaper transport options.
The company plans to expand its EV fleet further in 2026 through more financing partners, manufacturer collaborations and charging infrastructure investments.
The rapid electrification push places Bolt at the centre of Nairobi’s shift towards cost-efficient mobility solutions as competition intensifies in the e-motorbike segment.
