Someone is making underground moves to contest the presidency in 2027.
Former Kenyan Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has reportedly hired the Montreal-based lobbying firm Dickens and Madson, committing $250,000 to raise international support for his potential candidacy.
This development comes on the heels of shifting political alliances in Kenya, prompting speculation about Matiang’i’s strategic positioning in the lead-up to the next election.
The agreement signed on July 13, 2024, mandates the firm to engage with influential governments, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan, alongside international organizations, to advance Matiang’i’s political ambitions.
These lobbying efforts are designed to facilitate the formulation and execution of policies that align with his vision for national governance and stability—key themes likely to resonate with voters as the elections draw nearer.
Although Matiang’i has maintained a low profile since exiting office in 2022, there is mounting speculation regarding his political aspirations.
Matiang’i’s tenure as interior minister under former President Uhuru Kenyatta (2013-2022) solidified his reputation as a strong and effective leader, particularly for his tough stance on security issues, including the threat posed by Al Shabaab.
His administration’s successes in enhancing national security resonate with a populace increasingly weary of political instability and violence.
However, the current political climate presents unique challenges.
The recent coalition forged between President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga complicates the landscape, as these seasoned politicians consolidate power and influence.
Observers argue that Matiang’i must articulate a clear and compelling narrative around his vision for Kenya that distinguishes him from both Ruto and Odinga.
The upcoming electoral cycle will also occur against a backdrop of rising discontent with Ruto’s administration, primarily due to economic challenges and governance issues.
This opens a window of opportunity for Matiang’i, especially as public sentiment increasingly favors leaders who prioritize constitutional order and accountability.
Activists in Matiang’i’s home region of Nyamira echo this sentiment, citing a growing appetite for a leadership style reminiscent of his tenure as a minister.
Yet, the road to the presidency is fraught with obstacles.
Matiang’i’s past leadership faced criticism, especially during the tumultuous 2017 elections when he enforced measures against opposition protests, which drew allegations of misconduct and human rights violations.
His subsequent entanglement with the Ruto government, including a police raid at his home, raises questions about his political viability and overall safety.
As the political scene in Kenya evolves, youthful support for Matiang’i is emerging, particularly among those disillusioned with the current administration.
Social media platforms buzz with endorsements, highlighting a potential grassroots campaign.
University student Douglas Wanyama encapsulates this sentiment:
“We need Matiang’i as our president in 2027. He represents our aspirations for a government that listens and acts for the people.”
For Matiang’i, the entities of effective communication, strategic alliances, and resonating with the electorate will be vital in defining his candidacy.
