The High Court will today deliver judgment in a case where prisoners are seeking to be allowed to attend the funeral ceremonies of their close family members.
The petition filed by Moses Dola and Sheria Mtaani wants the law changed so bereaved inmates are informed and get automatic permission to attend the funerals of loved ones.
Dola who is an inmate at the Kiambu GK prison says he filed the petition on behalf of all other prisoners.
Dola was in 2018 convicted of manslaughter in the death of his wife Wambui Kibiro.
He filed the petition after his mother died but he wasn't allowed to attend the funeral, a move he terms a violation and erosion of a fundamental freedom and right of prisoners.
Milimani High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi will deliver the judgment today.
