Embakasi East MP Babu Owino received a rousing welcome during the burial of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang in Homa Bay County.
Owino arrived at Nyawango Primary School flanked by his assistants and a few youths. But upon his arrival, a crowd of energetic youth noticed him and burst into cheers, momentarily halting the ceremony.
Recognising the warm reception, Owino waved at the youthful crowd until he joined fellow leaders at their designated seating area. Once he had taken his seat, the crowd fell silent.
Their admiration for the legislator became even more evident during Governor Gladys Wanga’s address. As she condemned certain opposition leaders for engaging in divisive politics, the mood began to shift.
“They are traversing the country to divide Kenyans along tribal lines. We will not allow them to scuttle the gains the Gen Zs and other leaders have made in uniting Kenyans,” Wanga said.
Just as she was about to hand over the microphone to Ojwang’s family, chants erupted from the crowd:
“Babu! Babu! Babu! Babu! Babu!”
Wanga paused, moved the microphone from her mouth, and leaned forward to listen to the growing chant. She then asked, “Do you want Babu to return to the podium?” The youth replied in the affirmative, loudly yelling, “Yeeeeeeeees.”
Wanga yielded and called Owino back to speak.

Once on the podium, Owino electrified the youthful crowd, most of them students from higher learning institutions, with a familiar rallying cry.
“Comrades power! Comrades power! In the comrades’ constitution, there are three rules. Rule number one, a comrade is always right. Rule number two, a comrade is never wrong. Rule number three, refer to rule number one,” he said, sending the crowd into cheers.
Earlier in line with the protocol, Owino had called for justice, “We want all police officers who participated in Ojwang’s murder arrested, charged and jailed. This should begin with the DIG Lagat,” he declared.
Wanga later resumed the programme and invited Ojwang’s family to speak.
