Bolo Bespoke: I Used to Sell Sugarcane in Mkokoteni Before Fame and Money

Renowned Kenyan fashion designer Bolo Bespoke has fired back at critics who accused him of showing off, reminding the public of his humble beginnings in a candid and defiant Instagram post.

“The whole world knows my story. The entire country knows how I used to suffer 10 years ago selling sugarcane in my mkokoteni along Jogoo Road,” Bolo wrote.

“And then there is somebody out here telling me that I should stop showing off… weeeh.”

The statement, laced with pride and resilience, struck a chord with many of his followers.

Bolo, now a household name in custom menswear and celebrity styling, has become an inspirational figure in Kenya’s fashion and entrepreneurship circles.

Known for dressing high-profile personalities and creating sleek, tailored looks under the Bolo Bespoke brand, the designer has built a brand grounded in grit, innovation, and bold storytelling.

In fact, my new name is Mr. Show Off,” he added cheekily, reclaiming the criticism as a badge of honour.

Fans and fellow creatives flooded the comments with support, many praising Bolo’s transparency and celebrating his rise from the streets of Nairobi to the elite fashion scene. His journey, from pushing a mkokoteni (handcart) to building a successful tailoring empire, has long been a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Bolo’s post comes at a time when public figures are increasingly being scrutinized for showcasing their success online. But for the designer, flaunting his achievements isn’t about arrogance; it’s about showing what’s possible when determination meets opportunity.
