Raila Replacement?: Shock as Babu Owino Receives Cheerful Reception in Siaya

Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino was on Saturday, July 12, 2025, greeted with a cheerful crowd in Rarieda Constituency, Siaya County, while attending a burial ceremony.

The legislator was in the area to condole with the family of James Ayaga, the vice chairman of the Luo Council of Elders, who lost his son Esao Ayaga following a short bout of illness.

Shortly after marking his entry, a cheerful crowd moved in to receive the youthful MP, prompting a slight pause in proceedings as he made his entry in the company of jubilant youths.

Warmest welcome

“A big thank you to the great people of Rarieda Constituency, Siaya County, for the warmest welcome. Together in love, together in progress, together we rise,” the MP took to his Facebook page to acknowledge the reception.

The reception follows after his appearance at Kokoth village in Homa Bay County during the burial of slain blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang on Friday, July 4, 2025, an event that was given a wide berth by top politicians.

During the function, crowds momentarily disrupted Governor Gladay Wanga’s address and demanded the legislator address them while chanting his name.

In his speech, Owino, demonstrating his knack for moving with the masses, sensationally stated that the Mawego Police Station set itself on fire.

His sentiments came after a mammoth crowd of youth, who took over the programme, carried Ojwang’s casket atop their shoulders in a procession towards the Mawego Police Station, which was later torched.

Owino said that the police station burnt itself to the ground, just as police had initially said that Ojwang’ had hit his head on the cell wall.

“To those who said that Ojwang’ had hit his head against the police cell wall to death, this police station has also set itself on fire,” Owino said.

Demand for justice

Ojwang’ was buried in a high-profile funeral that saw various local leaders attend his interment service, with most of them demanding justice for the family.

The father of one was the only child in his family and had left distraught parents, a young wife and a boy behind after he was killed at the hands of police officers.
