Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has shared rare details about his daughter Ngina Kenyatta’s dowry negotiations, revealing how the process unfolded and the special role his late friend Frank Ireri played in the traditional ceremony.

Speaking during a recent tribute to Ireri, Uhuru recounted how the late banker helped coordinate the early stages of the marriage talks between Ngina and her now-husband, Alex Mwai.

The Secret Traditional Wedding
Ngina Kenyatta, the youngest daughter of the former Head of State, tied the knot with Alex Mwai in a private Kikuyu traditional wedding ceremony in June 2022.

Photos from the event later surfaced online, showing Ngina dressed in elegant African attire, surrounded by family and close friends.

Uhuru admitted that he initially tried to postpone his daughter’s wedding using various excuses, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 general elections, hoping to delay the union a little longer.

Frank Ireri’s Involvement
During his tribute, Uhuru disclosed that the late Frank Ireri had a close connection to the groom’s family and played a vital role in ensuring the process went smoothly.

“When one of his in-laws, in the name of Sam Mwai, wanted to start making approaches — because there was a young man named Alex who was interested in someone from my compound — I wasn’t very eager to part with her,” Uhuru said.

“As we began engaging, Frank made sure everyone was comfortable.”

 

Who Attended the Ceremony
The private ceremony was attended by a select group of guests, including Health CS Mutahi Kagwe and Mama Ngina Kenyatta, who wore a stylish purple hat and floral dress with pearls.

According to those present, the wedding theme was traditional African wear, dominated by shades of blue and red.

Former State House Digital Strategist Dennis Itumbi was among the first to share the news publicly, congratulating Ngina and Alex on their union via Twitter.
