KNEC Release Statement After An Examiner Collapses And Dies During A Marking Exercise

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued a statement following the death of an examiner during a marking exercise in Makueni County.

 

In a press statement dated Monday, November 24, 2025, and released on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the authority confirmed that the examiner, who was a team leader, passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025.

 

KNEC further confirmed that the teacher was an examiner for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

 

The examiner who was overseeing the Creative Arts and Sports paper passed away at Machakos Girls’ High School.

 

“It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of one of our examiners for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA). Mr. Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku passed away this morning at Machakos Girls High School, where he was a team leader in the Creative Arts and Sports paper,”KNEC said.

KNEC further noted that at the time of his passing on, Mutuku had been actively performing his duties as a team leader since November 7, 2025.

 

KNEC, while mourning the loss of the examiner, revealed that he was a dedicated teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County.

 

“The KJSEA marking exercise began on 7th November 2025, and Mr. Mutuku had been actively and diligently performing his duties as a team leader since then. Until his demise, Mr. Mutuku was a dedicated teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County,” KNEC stated.

 

According to KNEC, Mutuku served as an examiner with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) of the now-defunct Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination for many years before his recent transition to the Competency-Based Education (CBE).

 

“Before the transition to the Competency Based Education (CBE), he served as an examiner with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) of the now-defunct Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination for many years,” KNEC announced.

 

While conveying their condolences to the family, KNEC also described him as a diligent teacher, adding that the authority has lost a gem.

 

“He was an experienced, diligent teacher, and we have, indeed, lost a gem. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr. Mutuku’s family, friends, loved ones, and fellow examiners,” KNEC added.
