MPs Demand Review of KDF Recruitment Schedule, Cite Unfairness

In a communiqué dated September 16, the MPs argued that the exercise does not adhere to the principles of fairness and non-discrimination as guided by the Constitution.
The letter submitted by Embakasi West MP and National Assembly Minority Whip Mark Mwenje, signed by 17 others, cites that the current itinerary is skewed against Nairobi County as KDF has designated a few recruitment centres against the large populace of the county.
The schedule has designated Nyayo Stadium to serve Embakasi (East, West North, South), Kamukunji, Makadara and Starehe constituencies.
The Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani has been designated to serve recruits from Kasarani, Ruaraka, Mathare and Roysambu constituencies.
Residents from Dagoretti (North, South), Lang'ata, Kibra and Westlands constituencies will present themselves at Jamhuri Grounds.
The legislators opined that the consolidation of these recruitment centres pose a logistical nightmare, while other counties have been accorded recruitment centres in every sub-county.
"The logistical parameters of this recruitment exercise, as currently structured, demonstrably fail to account for the unique demographic challenges and high population density of Nairobi," read the statement in part.
"The allocation for recruitment for Nairobi should be commensurate with the percentage of the population of the country. This recruitment plan is a clear affront to the constitutional right to equal opportunity. The concentration of vast numbers of applicants from a diverse and densely populated region at a handful of centers will inevitably lead to logistical chaos, security risk."
The MPs therefore want an immediate review of the exercise to create centres in all the 17 constituencies in Nairobi that will accommodate more recruits.
They also demand a response from the Ministry of Defense within 7 days, threatening to take further action.
KDF announced its 2025 nationwide recruitment exercise on September 15, inviting skilled professionals and officers aspiring to serve in its ranks, and the recruitment exercise will take place in October 2025.
The intake includes openings for General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets, Specialist Officers, Tradesmen/women and other specialized roles in fields such as Education, Engineering, ICT, Mass Communication, Legal and Supply Chain Management.
Successful applicants will undergo rigorous selection and training processes, “designed to instill discipline, patriotism, and technical competence”.
