Old Mutual Unveils ‘Thrive’ App To Combat Burnout and Boost Wellness

Integrated financial services provider Old Mutual has launched Thrive, a digital wellness platform designed to address Kenya’s rising cases of burnout and lifestyle-related stress by integrating physical, mental, nutritional, and financial well-being into one digital experience.

The platform’s rollout comes amid growing concerns over the cost of workplace stress. The Ministry of Health estimates that burnout drains over KES 50 billion annually in lost productivity, while mental health conditions cost the economy an additional KES 62.2 billion—about 0.6% of GDP.

With more than 3.7 million Kenyans affected by stress-related conditions, Old Mutual says the launch of Thrive marks a major milestone in its digital innovation journey.

“Thrive is more than a wellness tool; it’s a step towards reshaping how we think about everyday health and resilience,” said Arthur Oginga, Group CEO, Old Mutual. “Our vision is to empower individuals to take small steps that build into lasting change, helping themselves, their families, workplaces, and communities to thrive.”

A 2023 survey by Corporate Staffing Services found that 68 percent of Kenyan professionals experience burnout, particularly in middle and senior management. The findings highlight the combined strain of poor nutrition, financial stress, and physical fatigue—underscoring the need for a holistic approach.

Thrive sets itself apart from generic fitness or budgeting apps by offering integrated wellness tools. Users can track their financial wellbeing score, and monitor their mind score through stress-management features, among others.

The app also includes personalized behavioral nudges, structured programs, and digital coaching to promote consistency and self-awareness.

“Thrive unifies previously fragmented wellness services into a single, accessible platform,” Oginga added. “It’s a daily companion that turns healthy living into measurable milestones and rewards progress.”

The initiative is part of Old Mutual’s digital transformation strategy, aimed at making holistic well-being accessible at both individual and organizational levels, addressing Kenya’s growing health, stress, and financial wellness challenges.
