Passenger dies on Kenya Airways flight from New York to Nairobi

A Kenya Airways flight from New York to Nairobi was struck by tragedy on Friday morning when an elderly passenger passed away mid-air after suffering a medical emergency.

According to a statement from Kenya Airways, the incident occurred aboard flight KQ 003, which had departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York en route to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

“At 0840 hours Nairobi Time, the crew notified the Kenya Airways Operations Control Centre that the passenger had collapsed,” the airline said in a statement.

"In accordance with international aviation medical protocols, the crew, supported by three qualified medical professionals who volunteered on board, immediately initiated emergency procedures, including the use of onboard medical equipment.”

Despite the use of onboard medical equipment and sustained resuscitation efforts, the passenger was pronounced dead at 9:10am, before the plane could land.

In an effort to seek urgent medical intervention, the flight crew had opted to divert to Entebbe International Airport in Uganda.

However, following the confirmation of the fatality, and in adherence to international aviation protocols, the aircraft resumed its journey to Nairobi.
