Professor Thomas Onyango Mboya has been killed over a land dispute in Mbita, Homa Bay County.

Mboya, who was a lecturer at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), was hacked to death by two young men.

The land dispute arose after some of Mboya’s neighbours allegedly encroached on his land in Kakrigu village.

The university lecturer then sought the intervention of the area chief and a land surveyor to help determine the boundaries of his land.

However, Professor Mboya and his father went to the disputed land ahead of the chief and the surveyor.

 On arrival in the disputed land, the two young men, armed with pangas, attacked Mboya and his father.

Mboya sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot, while his father was also injured in the attack.

Mbita Deputy Sub-County Commissioner Peter Mutiso said the two attackers fled after committing the heinous act.

Police officers have since commenced investigations into the incident and a manhunt for the two suspects.

Mboya’s body was moved to MED 25 Kirindo mortuary in Homa Bay for preservation.

Meanwhile, his father was rushed to Mbita sub-county Hospital for medication and is in a stable condition.

Mbita constituency Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo condemned the killing of Mboya, terming it unfortunate.

The ODM MP demanded that the security agencies bring to book anyone who abetted the death of the TUK professor.

“The murder of Professor Thomas Mboya of Rusinga Island is unfortunate. Violence never sorts out issues,” said Odhiambo.

She continued, “May the killer and any persons who may have aided or abetted in his death be brought to book.”
