Nairobi: Woman breaks friend's arm in row over Sh2,000 debt

A woman who claims she was attacked by a friend over a Sh2,150 debt is seeking justice after suffering a fractured arm during a confrontation.

Doreen Gatwiri says her friend, Joselyne Kanini, grievously injured her on February 21 outside Kanini’s house in Lungalunga, Makadara Sub-county, Nairobi. Gatwiri had gone to demand repayment of the debt.

Prior to the incident, the two were friends and ran a business selling general household items, including cooking gas. The accused allegedly borrowed Sh1,150 from Gatwiri and took a 6kg gas cylinder on credit.

According to investigations, Kanini failed to pay the money, prompting Gatwiri to visit her home and demand payment. She was accompanied by another trader who had also sold a handbag and dress to Kanini on credit.

Gatwiri said that on arrival, the accused told them not to enter the house or she would stab them both.

The complainant and her friend remained outside since Kanini was armed with a knife. Gatwiri said the accused rudely told them she did not have the money and would only repay the debt when she was ready.

Gatwiri demanded the return of her gas cylinder, which allegedly enraged Kanini. The accused reportedly pounced on her. Gatwiri stated that she fell down and fractured her arm due to the impact.

She added that Kanini tried to stab her, but her friend stepped in and restrained the accused from stabbing her.

Kanini was granted a cash bail of Sh50,000.

The matter is scheduled for mention on June 12 for pretrial.
