Leaked: Albert Ojwang's Death, Details of Last Phone Call to Friend Before Dying in Police Custody

A phone conversation between the late X influencer Albert Ojwang and his friend has been leaked online, revealing some of his last moments alive and his state of mind shortly after his apprehension.

What stuck out most from the clip was the influencer seeking solace from his friend, whether he was safe in police custody. This premonition would, unfortunately, come true after he passed away under mysterious circumstances while in police custody on Sunday, June 8.

Ojwang, who had been apprehended hours earlier in Homa Bay and driven to the Central Police Station in Nairobi, also told his unidentified friend that he had not been informed of the charges against him and was awaiting communication.

"Have you ever been apprehended? ... How is it? I have never experienced this before," Ojwang was heard asking his friend, seemingly apprehensive of the ordeal.

At this point, the friend revealed that he had previously been held at the Industrial Area Police Station and that his stay was not as challenging as expected.

"There will be challenges here and there, but things will be fine. I have been to Industrial Area, and it's one of the worst police stations in Nairobi, so you will be okay," the friends assured.

In a heartbreaking climax to the phone call, Ojwang uttered the words that have since gone viral, asking his friend, "Will I be safe in here?"

To which his friend relayed that he would be safe since remand is generally safe. "Yes, remand is safe," he simply answered.

These words would haunt the friend, whose phone call was intended to confirm Ojwang's whereabouts and set up a visit, as soon as news broke hours later that he had died in police custody.

In a statement issued Sunday night following his tragic death, the police said that Ojwang had killed himself by hitting his head on his police cell and that the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) had begun an investigation into the incident.

Dissatisfied, some Kenyans, including politicians and activists, called for accountability, disputing the police's claim that he intentionally killed himself.

On Monday, June 9, at around midnight, Douglas Kanja, the Inspector General of Police, declared that the OCS, the duty officer, and every other officer on duty at the Central Police Station had been placed under arrest.
