Richard Onyonka Reveals He Is Open To Joining Jubilee If Matiang’i Asks Him To

Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka has revealed that he is open to joining the Jubilee Party if former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i asks him to do so.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, November 10, 2025, Onyonka emphasised that his decision on party affiliation will be guided by the best pathway to winning the seat, rather than strict ideological alignment.

At the same time, the Senator said he remains comfortable staying in ODM if no such invitation is extended, as he prepares to vie for the Kisii gubernatorial seat.

“Politics in Kenya is shifting. If I find that I will win my seat with the Jubilee party, that’s what I’ll do,” he said, highlighting the pragmatic nature of political manoeuvres in the country.

The Senator described his backing of Matiang’i as a personal risk that has influenced his political trajectory.

“Because I’ve taken my space and time to support Fred Matiang’i, if he asked me to join Jubilee, I would seriously consider that and join him. If he doesn’t, I am comfortable remaining in ODM,” he said.

Onyonka reflected on his history of moving between parties, explaining that strategic shifts were often necessary to survive politically.

“I’ve never won an election with more than one party. Every move I made, every time I was moving away, it was because I saw I was going to be rigged out, so I moved ahead of the opposition,” he explained.

The senator highlighted his political journey, noting that he has previously been affiliated with PDP, ODM, and Ford Kenya, making strategic adjustments to secure party tickets and maintain electoral viability.

The Senator also expressed openness to coalition arrangements, including potential alliances between ODM, Jubilee, and other opposition parties. “Either way, I am always comfortable,” he said, signalling flexibility as the 2027 elections approach.

Matiang’i, who recently emerged as the Jubilee Party presidential flagbearer and serves as the party’s deputy leader, has been a key ally of Onyonka.
