Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku now says the proposed Finance Bill 2024 will be revisited and contentious sections re-looked into so that it does not hurt Kenyans.
Ruku was pressed to explain why the proposed bill is seeking to tax car owners even more, despite the fact that they are already paying taxes on the same.
The MP said when the proposed bill gets into parliament, MPs will change the proposed car taxes to target only commercial vehicles and not personal cars.
"The motor vehicle tax will be reduced to motor vehicles (commercial vehicles and trucks) that are generating income," Ruku said.
However, the MP was reminded that Kenyans are already paying numerous taxes on the said category of vehicles and asked to explain why the government wants to tax them further.
Ruku defended the government of the day saying the 2024 Finance Bill is just a proposal that will be scutinised further.
"It is just a proposal that has been put forward by our administration and we will be there to analyse the pros and cons. We are coming from the point where we are not the first country in the world to have these kinds of taxes," Ruku further claimed.
The proposed bill is seeking, among others, to impose a 2.5% tax on all motor vehicle owners, which will be not less than Ksh.5000 and not more than Ksh.100,000 per year.
The taxes will be deducted through insurance companies. The proposed bill has already elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans, with the majority of them blasting the government for overtaxing them.
